Build a first résumé from projects and real responsibilities

Turn coursework, volunteer work, and personal projects into accurate evidence without presenting them as paid employment.

A first résumé can use coursework, volunteering, and personal projects when the work is relevant and labeled accurately. Describe what you produced, the constraints you worked under, and your contribution. You do not need to disguise unpaid work as a job to make it concrete.

Inventory the work before choosing a format

List three to five projects or responsibilities. For each, write the purpose, what you personally did, the output, and how someone could inspect it. An artifact might be a spreadsheet, a published page, a presentation, or a documented event plan. Remove confidential material from anything you share.

A fictional project entry

“Course project: library event schedule. Built a spreadsheet covering six events, recorded room capacity and volunteer availability, and presented the schedule with two alternatives.” This is more informative than “Excellent leadership and organizational skills.” It also does not imply a real library hired the student.

QuestionExample answer
Was this paid work? No; course project
What did you own?Spreadsheet and schedule options
Was the schedule used?Presented in class; implementation unknown

Do not turn a simulated outcome into a customer result. If the project used synthetic data, say so when describing the work or sharing the artifact.

Ask for entries, not imaginary achievements

Working template

Help me select evidence for my first résumé.
Separate coursework, volunteer responsibilities, and personal projects.
For each item, draft a heading with an accurate label and two factual bullets.
Ask which parts I personally completed.
Do not imply paid clients, implementation, or measured impact unless confirmed.
Target role: [role]
Work I have done: [facts]

Prioritize relevance and readability

Choose the work that best matches the role’s actual tasks. A detailed unrelated project can crowd out a smaller relevant one. Put tools beside the tasks they supported so the reader can distinguish “used spreadsheets to build a schedule” from an unsupported advanced skill claim.

Before applying, open every portfolio link in a private browser window. Check that access works without your account, the page explains your role, and collaborators are credited. A résumé link should show evidence without exposing private records or making the reviewer request permission just to see the basic work.
